Well ks usually it's the other way around.
They take care of you! Growing up on the farm my younger sisters named the cows. Curly was memorable. We had a huge cherry tree that was struck by lightning one Spring. So this huge limb layed on the ground but was still attached to the trunk. When it started producing cherries Curly would eat them and spit out the seeds! Funniest thing to see back then. (as opposed to 3 channels on a B&W tv.) That doesn't support my point so what? Memories drive me nuts.
So as a kid our dog was the smartest animal on the farm and my bud. Just a mid sized mutt but he ruled the farm animals, protected them and us. Nothing got by Smokey. Later in my life I had to take care of a cat normally not my favorite animal. ( the 8 kitten litter born in my closet when I was 12 was a factor). So it was a Siamese and I began to understand cats. Chester Nimitz is my current one. Very low maintenance but nice to have around. Dogs are babies now days, cats are way smarted than you think. IMO
