FBI malfeasance is a greatest hit conservative conspiracy theorists love to play; It’s the idea, advanced by Sen. Ted Cruz among others, that FBI informants or even agents were involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, the pizzagate scandal, and more.

Putting aside that apparently bogus claim and this latest conservative obsession with “groomers”—the myth that LGBTQ people actively groom and recruit young people to their ranks—there is absolutely zero evidence that 18-year-old Salvador Ramos identified as trans or was a crossdresser. This claim has spread like wildfire in a politically-charged campaign that got its start on the extremist internet forum, 4chan.
