Forensically, The techniques have been around for years. What is needed is the bullet from the deceased and a weapon to test other rounds on then to match the barrel rifling and such to the test round. However, the US allegedly has the round but without a weapon to compare you just have a mushed up bullet.

Questions arising are will the real weapon be turned in for testing? It would be an easy thing to hand over a different matching weapon.
