Everyone lives in a State where portions of it can be accurately described as a shithole; poverty, crime, poor health metrics.
Some States have larger portions that can be so described.
A larger picture is provided by economics, specifically GDP that is taxed and redistributed.
By that measure CA, TX, NY, FL & IL, among others, are first world economies producing GDP equivalent to that of entire nations.
The redistribution of high GDP tax money goes disproportionately to States of the old confederacy. Despite that largesse many of those states have the very worst metrics, shithole metrics in large portions of those States in fact.
