Actually polls suggest Americans are slowly being weaned from religion, slowly, yet at least it is not trending
the other way. Oops, there must be some impatience of mine speaking there as "rapidly" is used here

In U.S., smaller share of adults identify as Christians, while religious 'nones' have grownThe religious landscape of the United States continues to change at a rapid clip. In Pew Research Center telephone surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019, 65% of American adults describe themselves as Christians when asked about their religion, down 12 percentage points over the past decade. Meanwhile, the religiously unaffiliated share of the population, consisting of people who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular,” now stands at 26%, up from 17% in 2009.

Maybe even there is something in that apparent drift which is prompting leaders to go the other way.

How strong a role does religion play in US elections?

No, it would be much more likely leaders simply understand how important religion still is to a solid
majority of Americans, so they cater to it any election campaign. Trump is a good example of that.

"I’m afraid if not now, it won’t be long before the SC will represent more than a minority.

The more religious one becomes, the more radical they will be, and the more ignorant one is, the more they are subject to radicalization. The spirit of Trump has and is radicalizing this country. Before Trump came along, regardless of my views, I believed that the powers that be, had better minds than mine, and the basics of human nature were for the good. Trump came along and I’ve been schooled. I had no idea how many truly ignorant, radical people there are all around me. It’s very sad that now, I cannot become friends with anyone that supports Trump, or any spirit that is related to him.
"

Me too. I don't think we would be in the minority in having those thoughts.

Still though the drift from religiosity in America could offer some reason to hope.

One final thing. From the last link above, this is very important for all Democrats to understand:

Black Americans, who are largely Democrats and and older and less liberal, are the most religious group:
83% say they believe in God (compared with 61%of whites). They are also more likely to attend church and pray.

It was Plato who said, “He, O men, is the wisest, who like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing”
