The only attention that needs to be paid is that which is informed by historical context.

First term, mid-term:

Clinton; Gingrich contract with America slaughter in '94. Clinton reelected.

Obama; Tea Party, he's a secret Muslim without a U.S. birth certificate hysteria, slaughter. Obama reelected in '12

Trump; Riding very high voter turnout and a wave of female and suburban revulsion at Donald Trump, the Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives, making a net gain of at least twenty-six seats.

Trump gets his ass handed to him two years later.

The usual pattern is a mid-term rebuke of the Party that holds the presidency. Sometimes it's predictive of the next presidential election, sometimes not.
