We could have given McArthur his wish and taken China, too
I don't think either General envisioned conquering to possess either country. If I remember correctly, from a book I read, MacArthur wanted to use nuclear weapons, Chiang Kai-shek and cobalt (land border) after having defeated China. His real ambition was to win the Korean war and defeat North Korea. I hardly think he would try to occupy a country with the population they had. More likely he would let Chiang Kai-shek take the reins of China.
And I don't think Patton wanted to rule Russia or occupy it. He was a great believer in histories lessons and would realize the foolhardiness of trying to occupy and control such a vast region.
In either case, occupying and controlling either of those countries would have been an impossible task. But, both believed, kicking their asses and taking them down a notch would have been in the best interests of not only America, but the world.
Who can say if they would have been right or wrong. And watching how things turned out, both becoming very strong adversaries, I guess it is worth a wish to have let them have their way.
Yah, sure, armchair general.
A bit of that in most of us, because the cost of being wrong is so slight. I admit to being an armchair quarterback and baseball manager as well. I do, however, draw the line at being a backseat driver. LOL!!
