They border the Ukraine, and russia is downwind on most days. Why would they nuke the land they want? Much of what they are after appears to be the natural resources, as they certainly aren't trying to "reunite" a culture, that is just hogwash... hard to sell rare earth minerals or grow wheat for sale when the farms have been covered in fallout. Even if he "just" used neutron bombs, he would likely get retaliatory strikes from any of several nations, not necessarily just us. All we really have is guesses. For example, would India take it as a signal to take out pakistan? etc., etc.

The whole idea of gaming out the multiple scenarios can be fun on a chat board, but we don't really have enough of the variables available to do much more than wildly guess.

Using nukes would result in retaliation, in my opinion; giving them the idea that we wouldn't retaliate doesn't really help anything that I can see. He has to know that Mutually Assured Destruction is what he is staring at, and his generals are generally patriots and would certainly game any scenario to prevent their homeland from being destroyed, up to and including taking removing putin. All, my opinion, and I do not want in any way to give comfort to the country that is destroying their neighbor.
