Large amounts of stinger missiles can neutralize the russian air superiority in a very rapid manner. If the first squad of attack helicopters get splashed, it gives the second wave pause to reflect about whether or not they like blasting civilians and what their life expectancy is in doing so. Poor morale gets even poorer when there are seeds of doubt in the mission.
