The article was useful for me in that it made the point that yet again Republicans were benefiting by dishonestly attacking Democrats by saying they supported policies they did not support. That is by misrepresenting the left of the party. By attacking the legislative left of the party for policies even they were not wholeheartedly responsible for.

In this case by dishonestly attacking the so-called Squad for activist inspired policy such as defunding police, renaming schools and

There are several problems with this analysis. For one, the members of “the Squad,” for all of the media attention they receive, are still backbenchers with little sway over the party’s legislative agenda: They are but six of the 222 Democratic members of the House. They’re also far more focused on creating equitable economic policy than on any of the things mentioned by Allen. Nor, it’s worth underlining, are they the engines of those policies. “Defund the police” emerged from activists .. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/17/defund-police-mainstream-324816 .. and has hardly been embraced by the Democratic Party. Renaming schools and tearing down statues emerged in similar fashion—both were seen as the bare minimum during the unrest over police brutality that defined the summer of 2020, something Allen does not mention—though both have more support within the party’s mainstream.

tearing down statues.

And by illustrating the point that even decidedly non-conservative sites as Axios were offering Republicans fodder by publishing such articles as that one of Mike Allen's.

Alex Shephard's point was that Republican's got traction by misrepresenting the Democrat Party. BY reminding us that even though the Democrat party was not pushing stuff as defunding police Republicans were gaining traction by dishonestly saying they were, while, importantly, getting away with the fact that elements of the Republican party were heavily involved in the attempted overturn of a legit American presidential election.

A case could be made that Republicans are getting more of a pass for the attempt to overturn the 2020 election—something many of the party’s sitting members of Congress refuse to publicly condemn—than Democrats are for policies like “defund” that they don’t even support.

Shepherd's treatment of Mike Allen's piece is in a way supported by this bit on Allen in Wikipedia .. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Allen_(journalist)#Criticism_and_controversy :

Allen has attracted criticism for focusing coverage on superficial aspects of politics and of the culture of Washington D.C.[9][1] In November 2013, The Washington Post wrote a lengthy article detailing a payola scandal in which Allen would give favorable Politico coverage in return for advertising dollars.[10] Allen has refused to publicly comment.[11] Jonathan Chait described Politico's response as 'evasive tripe'.[12] Writing in Salon, Alex Pareene described his work as "indistinguishable from a paid advocate for business interests."[13]

In November 2015, Allen made an apology after the website Gawker reported that he offered to let Chelsea Clinton screen interview questions in advance of a proposed interview. The offer was made in a January 2013 email exchange between Allen and Hillary Clinton's aide Philippe Reines. He also promised in the email that the interview would be "no surprises" and "no risk."[14]

"And I hope the Democrats come up with some more moderate candidates."

What radical ideas which you see as inane are in the policy platform of the Democrat Party?
