About 100 years ago, I spent two weeks in the Peten, we were staying at Petexbatun and Sayaxche (a seriously crazy place) and got a chance to see Tikal. As impressive as it is, if you travel along the Usumacinta River, you can get an idea of the scale of the Mayan civilization. Numerous, too many to count, large objects covered now by vines, etc, which were buildings along the river.

On the other side of the Usumacinta is Mexico and in some places the River is only about 100 yards wide. While we were there the problem was with artifact looting, you steal something, get across the River and the next day you're at the Met Museum in NYC.

Unfortunately, since then, the narcos have taken over the area plying the same trade route as the looters had. And, in the process, chased many people, like our one time hosts, out of the area.
