"A total of one hundred eleven pilots died in the first eight months of this year!
This is a 1,750% increase from 2020, when the world was supposed to be in the middle of a pandemic.
A list of the deceased individuals was published in the Air Line Pilot Association magazine.
In comparison, there were 6 airline pilot deaths in 2020, and only one death in 2019." ______
That reference to the ALPA magazine "In Memoriam" feature is out of context. Those names are published when information regarding the passage of a pilot is received from that pilot's friends or family. It only makes sense that recent months would have more listings as people send in their memorial requests. Just because the editors only received one memorial request for a death in 2019 for publication in that particular month's edition doesn't mean only one pilot died in 2019.
From the editors of ALPA magazine:
In every edition of Air Line Pilot magazine, we honor our pilots—both active and retired—who have flown west. Based on verified info provided by their families, we reported the loss of more pilots in both 2019 and 2020 than in 2021. We report the losses in our magazine as we receive information from the families. The information in one magazine edition does not provide a complete report of the total losses for each of the listed years.
