Colbert is in his prime. So incredibly quick at improv it boggles the mind. The other guy I thought was doing great, even during the home covid year, was Trevor Noah. I realize he is experimenting with different forms, (most of them suck so far), transitioning from a news spoof and commentary into sketch-type comedy just ain't cuttin' it. He has a top-rate group of supporting characters but then uses them in awkward openings, etc. They have taken a top-flight group of comedians and sometimes force them into delivering lines that they are clearly uncomfortable with and below their skill levels. When they do their independent guy on the street stuff and essay bits, they still shine.
Sort of like limiting Lucille Ball to telling knock-knock jokes while those around her do physical comedy. (I know she could make them funny somehow anyway, bad analogy) Desi Lydic could probably take over and it would improve.
Trevor better get his poop in a group, or I fear he will suddenly disappear.
