Re: eris: crumedgeons, antisemites, racist, etc.
Communism doesn't really threaten democracy - not by definition. It threatens profits.
Um... no.
Any new political system threatens only one thing, those in power under the old system.
1) Communism is not a political system. It is an economic system. The two are connected, but not synonymous. And the distinction is important in this case.
2) 'Those in power under the old system' just happen to be people who are enjoying the most profits. Don't get me wrong, I do not think that a communist system would make the world a better place. But not for the reasons most people do (and most people don't even understand their own reasons.)
So American youth are trained to want to destroy all communism
ROTFL. With nano-second attention spans and an education system that largely consists of hanging out at the mall this does't seem much like a very formidable army. Unless you want to count all that mall time as "capitalist indoctrination", I'd have to say that exactly the opposite is true.
Has it been so long since you were 'youth'? I'm not talking about education, I'm talking about socialization. It works even with illiterate rednecks.
Young students today are taught that trees and wild animals are good and big companies are bad. Ask any ten high school graduates in my state who was President during the Civil War and sixty percent of them will give you answers like George Washington or Martin Luther King. Ask the same group the words to the latest Marlyn Manson ditty and you are likely to get a verbatim rendition from all ten.
All of which has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue under discussion. They said the same thing about my age group (right in the middle of generation X). But somehow I know who the president was during the Civil War.
One simply cannot train the untrainable.
Are you untrainable? Were you ever untrainable?
I believe what will end these situations is a tremendous cultural/social mindset shift, not a political one.
Incidentally, the nutcase-religious right has exactly the same mantra.
Really? And I thought the nutcase religious right were all Republicans... I thought they wanted to outlaw abortion, and drugs... boy, where have I been???
(Which would result in most of the top offices in the US government not being occupied by corporate interests...)
Yeah, right. That along with a double order of thermal underwear to help protect the inhabitants of Hades from getting a chill.
Why assume that what we live with now is an unchangeable law of physics? It wasn't so long ago that slavery was prevalent throughout most of the world. It wasn't long ago that women had never had the right to vote anywhere in the world. Why disbelieve now that things can change, when so much changed in the 20th century? Human society gets better all the time; it's insane to think that war will disappear very soon, but it isn't insane to expect that it will eventually; just like slavery.
