Most of the nation didn't get polio. And at no time did as many die of it as have died of COVID. Yet many who did get it were condemned to live with its effects for the rest of their lives. When the vaccine arrived, it was greeted with enormous enthusiasm. So many people were vaccinated over the years that the disease was wiped out in this country.
