California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The Commission recently clarified and reinforced that the use of directed biogas is permissible under the Bioenergy Market Adjusting Tariff (BioMAT) program, a feed-in tariff program which allows eligible plants to sell power to one of the state’s three investor-owned utilities at a fixed price, thus clearing the way for the continued development of the Toyota Port of Long Beach FuelCell Energy hydrogen project.

Directed biogas is biomethane that is collected from waste plants, dairy farms and other facilities that emit methane as a byproduct of their daily operations. It is fed into the state’s network of gas pipelines allowing plants using directed biogas to draw it directly from the pipeline for their power production.
