Received this note from an attorney in reply to my post on another MB:

We give up a client when they can't pay the bill! I think that is one of the reasons he was unloading stock. Also, we seek leave to withdraw when a client is attempting to defraud the court. There is a misperception that lawyers make it up, lie, etc. The majority of attorneys are ethical and will refuse such tactics.
