You bought tesla for 700. The shares are an asset. I borrow thoes assets. So now you have a promissory note for 700 shares, an asset. And I have a notes payable to you (liability) and shares (asset). Nothing is short yet. I sell the shares (asset) and now I'm short and all I have is the note payable to you (liability). I hope to buy but can't. Who is going to buy that note payable to you (libility) to pay you back the shares?
