Friedman took away the sense that corps had any obligation to be good for society, any thing that wasn't illegal was fair game to make as much profit as possible...

Until Friedman, corps has a social contract (see Locke) with society and it worked out well for both..

Friedman introduced the theory in a 1970 essay for The New York Times titled "A Friedman Doctrine: The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Its Profits". In it, he argued that a company has no social responsibility to the public or society; its only responsibility is to its shareholders.

You know what it is to sign a contract. It means you abide with all the rules and regulations of that contract and agree to follow them, discontinuity of which would cause serious punishable consequences. A social contract is what we all sign as a part of the society we live in, in order to enjoy its social benefits. It is not an official contract, but a fiction; that of mutual understanding.
