Just tried that and no change. Windows 10 running Chrome. So then I tried it on an Android device again using Chrome and the same result.

Again, the button works on messages selected out of my main mailbox, just not on ones selected out of the "Inbox Archive".

No biggie. Just wanted to delete some old junk but didn't want to go with the nuclear option and use the "Clear All" button.
