About the Centre for Vaccinology - CEVAC
The Centre for VaccineOlogy (CEVAC) was created in 1986 from a research project on hepatitis B vaccination. Since then, the research unit has grown steadily and the number of areas of interest has also increased. The CEVAC is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University and of the Laboratory of Clinical Biology of the UZ Gent.
Cevac research contributes to the development of effective vaccines against the many infectious diseases that can affect humans.
In recent decades, CEVAC has been involved in the development and evaluation of vaccines against hepatitis B virus, the first combined hepatitis A/B vaccine, a therapeutic vaccine against hepatitis C, cervical cancer vaccines, herpes simplex viruses, human immune deficiency virus (HIV, the pathogen of AIDS), tuberculosis, whooping cough, flu, group B streptococcus, whooping cough, rsv and so on.
The CEVAC consists of two departments: the clinical unit and the laboratory unit.
Clinical unit
In the Clinical Unit, the participants of a vaccine study come along for the different study procedures. Most studies in the CEVAC are commissioned by pharmaceutical companies: the clients or sponsors. They run in accordance with international standards of good clinical practice (GCP). A team of about ten employees – doctors, nurses, study coordinators and administrative staff – takes care of the study procedures.
Laboratory unit
In the Laboratory Unit (CEVAC Core Lab), the blood samples obtained during the clinical vaccine studies are processed, analyzed and carefully stored according to the highest quality standards. A team of about fifteen experienced laboratory technicians monitors the entire process.
