Women's pay finally gets a sporting chance

For women in sport, equal pay for equal work has been aspirational at best. This week it became a reality for the Matildas with a new deal for the women’s soccer team that matches their male counterparts. A long time coming, it’s a milestone to be celebrated and throws down the gauntlet to other sporting codes competing for future generations of players.

Under the four-year deal, the Matildas will earn a 24 per cent share of revenue made by the national team, which will be increased each year by 1 per cent. A new three-tiered contract system will offer up a salary ranging from $66,000 to $100,000, with the top tier equal to the men’s highest salary. On top of that, they will be entitled to business-class flights, better training facilities and more support staff. They have earned it.
