Exit Strategy: My Latest Thought

Thanks much to Scooby, Chip and JSGatt for your comments about the proper exit strategy. I printed out your posts and plan to file them. After reading them over, I have a new thought.

Perhaps it is a mistake for me to be looking at a dollar amount as an indicator of when to exit. Actually, whenever there is a run-up, I get pressured from friends and family to sell some and it isn't easy resisting. Saying no makes me feel a little guilty, as if I have a gambler's mentality.

There is a reason, however, why I hold firm and do not sell. From the perspective of what the company is trying to accomplish, it simply makes no sense to sell now or any time soon. It has taken these several years for things to come together. Finally now, the company is at that point where they are on the verge of developing a commercial product - taking all the necessary steps to pave the way for that day. Even if the share price spikes, it would be foolhearty to leave now. I want to wait and see what they can do. Can they succeed in taking this new technology and making it into something that will really work? If they can, the future will truly be bright. I want to stick around to see.

In other words, there is an internal logic involving what the company is trying to accomplish which will end up influencing my decision when to sell. This is different than "just" the share price, however enticing it will be. holycow
