The trin is a ratio.

The formula for the Trin is as follows:

Advancing Issues / Declining Issues
----------------------------------------------------
Advancing Volume / Declining Volume


So, even if you had 1 stock advancing for 5 declining
and volume 1 to 5, you would still have a ratio of 1.0 although the market could be down 300 points. Some feel the trin is only important by showing a 5-day average showinga trend. I find trin readings almost worthless on a intraday basis - much because of what we are seeing today.
