I am from north dakota, grew up there. Yes, the weather is extreme, but your "observations" of no Buddhism, etc. Is mostly just stereotypical bias. They have always put a premium on education, even though a large number of us moved on. It was often said that other than farm products, their main export is educated people with great work ethics. The plague of conservatism is a severe problem lately. One unique feature is the Bank of North Dakota, a system lauded for its socialist bent, but just remember to not call it that.
