If you’ve paid any attention to the news, particularly cable news, over the last couple of months since George Floyd’s killing by police in Minneapolis, you might think “defunding” or “abolishing” the police is a widely held and even somewhat mainstream desire.

Nah, I never thought that. I did think it was both an overwrought response to a real problem of the too frequent application of excessive force in minority communities, and a bad choice of a phrase.

I'm not hearing it any more, but I am hearing about allocating more money for better selection, training and supervision of police.

The author of the column probably knows all that, which makes him a little untrustworthy.
