that have been tried and tested to be very good that just that, they are readily available and probably already labs have these cells in house, so it makes perfect sense to *start* with these in vitro models IMO



Sure, start with ones you have on hand but then look at cell lines more relevant to the medical problem you are addressing. I mean the assays being conducted aren't very sophisticated or labor intensive. They are measuring viral replication and cell killing. Pretty basic stuff. The ATCC has immortalized lung epithelial cells so the cell lines can't be that hard to maintain.

Like is said before, some of this is 20/20 hindsight but any new drugs need to be tested in cell lines relevant to coronavirus infection.
