He's not playing. West Point educated, historically a hard science/engineering oriented curriculum, he likely never shed his hagiographic grammar school/HS take on American History.

In other words he really doesn't know any better and he is reflexively inclined to be a red baiter in the McCarthy-Cohen-Nixon vein.
