Dr. Rick Bright, a whistleblower who was sacked from his position at a top U.S. health agency responsible for developing drugs to fight the coronavirus, testified to Congress on Thursday, telling lawmakers that he was met with "indifference" and "hostility" when warning of the coronavirus in January.

Bright testified that the U.S. still lacked a comprehensive and "coordinated" plan for ensuring a supply of basic supplies like swabs needed to administer coronavirus tests.

He also testified to the subcommittee on health that he would "never forget" an e-mail he got in January from a U.S. supplier of medical-grade face masks warning of a dire shortage, and that's when they realized they were in "deep sh**t."

The whistleblower also questioned the timeline for a vaccine, saying 12-18 months was an optimistic projection despite President Trump saying that he "expects a vaccine could be ready" by the end of the year.

Bright, who was reassigned to a new government job last month, said he was ousted from BARDA because he resisted efforts to push the drugs hydroxychloroquine and the related chloroquine as cures for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Bright also warned that the country has a limited window of time to provide a plan for a resurgence of the virus and to prevent the "darkest winter in modern history."

The pandemic has infected nearly 1.4 million people in the United States, gutted the economy and killed more than 82,000.

Don't wear masks. To eliminate any danger of mask shortages we will simply change
CDC advice to impress upon those who don't need masks that they should not get one.
