Sweden isn’t doing a nationwide lockdown like everybody else. They have put it on their citizens to act responsibly, which means work from home if possible. The only thing they have done is ban groups of 50 or more . Restaurants still open but only allowing the number of patrons who can sit at one time. Good, we need to see how that works. Every experiment needs a control group.
All the liberals on my Facebook feed right now are going “ah the dumb republicans are trading the economy and stock prices for lives.” But here’s the thing. You can’t shut down an economy forever or else you turn it into a depression. My environmental job is largely funded by a tax on gasoline. If nobody drives and buys gasoline, I don’t have money for my job to exist. My wife works for a state science office. It’s state funded. Without income tax and sales tax revenue, she just heard today her job may be in jeopardy when the state fiscal year rolls over July 1. There are sooo many jobs that could be lost the longer this drags on. So what do you do? Keep everything closed and cause misery for 200 million Americans and make the government bail out not only many companies, but every state as well (states can’t run budget deficits like the feds can)? The misery could last 10 years if its like the Great Depression, if business confidence is completely lost and banks have no money to lend to new startups because all the old businesses went bankrupt? IMO the economy has to be restarted by the current April 30 deadline. They HAVE to come up with a different way to respond to this by then. Whether it’s to set up temp covid tents at every hospital to expand capacity, find a drug(s) to combat it, a better course of treatment, or much more testing of everybody to lower the time each person is unknowingly out transmitting the virus to others. It simply cannot last longer or depression is the outcome.
