This is a new virus with no community resistance.

Viruses are apt to mutate (sometimes becoming more virulent, sometimes not).

Mortality rate for COVID-19 could be on the order of 10 times more deadly than the standard influenza (stressing the "could be" we don't know for certain yet).

"Going nuts" could stop the virus from becoming endemic in the global population.

Concerted action based on science and expertise is the right thing to do.
