Biologically male athlete to take part in U.S. women’s Olympic Trials

Megan Youngren, a biologically born male who now identifies as female, will compete in the Olympic Marathon trials scheduled for February 29, 2020, in Atlanta, GA, as the first openly transgender athlete to do so, reports Sports Illustrated.

The race will determine three women who will represent the United States in the marathon at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Youngren started her transition from a male to a female in 2011, when she was a college student. The next year, she officially began identifying as a transgender. Youngren started running to lose weight and improve her health. She qualified for the trial after her performance at the California International Marathon on Dec. 8, 2019.

The issue of transgender people competing in women’s sports has become more prominent in recent years. Trans female athletes at all levels of sport are winning medals with Youngren being the latest trans runner who’s captured headlines.

In October, the Big Sky Conference named transgender athlete June Eastwood, who had previously competed in the male’s categories, as the female athlete of the week. CeCe Telfer, who has also participated in man’s sports before her transition, won an NCAA DII women’s track championship in May 2019.

This has sparked a debate over the future of gender competition, with cisgender counterparts saying transgender athletes are snatching their chances at scholarships and championship titles. This week, the families of three high school girls in Connecticut sued to stop trans athletes from competing in women’s categories.
