Imo, Doug had no other option but to dig a hole. Without Fortress on board Andrea would have been bankrupt years ago.

At least, by taking Fortress on board he managed to get a few hundred K in bonuses + salary.

So, in the end, for him it turned out pretty well (regardless of the final outcome). Not too bad for someone who singlehandedly ruined a once promising company.
