No work today, but I will start planning my next big efforts here at home.
The palm frond that fell on the power lines yesterday took out power to hundreds of people. This happened once before during hurricane Wilma, and it was that palm frond that prevented them from re-energizing power for a few days. (After a storm, they try to turn the main lines back up, but if there's a fault they move on to lower hanging fruit and come back later)
The line that travels in front of my house crosses the canal and feeds quite a few homes and a firehouse, so it gets the power company's attention pretty quickly when it goes down. If one is on a side leg, it takes a lot longer. For example, after Hurricane Irma my power was out 4 days. The guy right across the street is on a side leg that takes off from the main feeder at the corner of my property. His power was out for two weeks before the power company came back and cleared the side leg faults.
So.... I've decided that I need to take both of the huge trees down. Today, if there is sun at the right time of day, I will measure shadows to determine how high the trees are. Then I need to figure out how to get them down safely. It's a tight fit (relatively speaking) between the house and the power lines. It's not as easy as getting a lift to take me up to the top because the septic drain field blocks getting a heavy machine close enough. I'll scratch my head over this for awhile. I don't plan on doing the extrication until near Christmas, so I have lots of time to plan.
