The law of the land is maintained by the law of the gun. A sad fact that we are not that far removed from our more despotic counterparts.
And our country is not unique in that. We are far away from some of the most violent countries of the world. Rwanda, Syria, Central America. Remember the Serbs attempt to ethnically cleanse?
One more point. I am of the opinion that we are somewhat at fault for some of this by giving these nut jobs a 72 hour news blitz platform, every time something like this happens. The whole point of many of these atrocities is to gain recognition or attention. Our media contributes by feeding that desire.
Add to that, all the political platitudes and all it becomes is one more clusterfuck, with more division than cohesiveness, to address the problem.
We argue about, "But, But, But, Obama allowed all those cops in Dallas to be killed". "Trump is promoting this by ...........". And we fuss over 20 getting killed at a single moment in time, while hundreds die in individual killings in places like Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore. We gloss over how many laws now exist in an effort to curtail violence, while demanding more laws. We abhor such measures as "Stop & Frisk" as an attack on our freedoms and privacy, at the same time we assure those very same advantages to murderers (whether mass of individual". We allow thugs to wear masks to use violence to propagate a political ideology on one hand while complaining about white nationalism on the other. We promote sanctuary cities for aliens, and denigrate our police, who we expect to be perfect, for actions of some overzealous bad apples.
It is a quagmire that we as a people have to either live with or make some sacrifice to correct. Like a bad parent that has caused mayhem from a child, we are responsible, to a great degree, for our own situation. We send law makers to our governments to try and address an impossible result, given our own restraints on what we will ourselves allow.
Look, it is as simple as this. We either give up some of our civil liberties, in favor of stricter law enforcement, or realize that no law will be effective in stopping these atrocities. I can live with being stopped and frisked. I have nothing to hide. But to some, that indignity is more abhorrent than the massacres we are now suffering.
