Sometimes they just can't leave well enough alone.

Just picture what you are turning as a clock face... clockwise tightens and counterclockwise loosens. There are exceptions, but they are rare and definitely will not be encountered on a toilet seat. (The exceptions usually have to do with motor driven things that might loosen themselves if the normal thread direction were used.)
