In years gone by, that was not his style.

I'm afraid the 'gone by' was the problem. Plus, the language that works in conference, the qualifying, the absence of conclusion jumping, the carefulness of lawyers briefing a case, doesn't work in a hearing unless you're at the top of your game.

I think from his initial presser through his obvious reluctance to appear, he was telling us that he was no longer there.
