Therapeutic Use of Stem Cells in Treatment of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries are one of the most common sources of trauma globally that comprise a significant drain on long-term personal and healthcare cost.

..Human skin accounts for 10% of total body mass, and therefore, burn injuries have significant sequelae on the health and physiology of the entire body. Burn injuries are a major worldwide public health concern.

..There currently does not exist an artificial model of skin that perfectly replicates the architecture and functionality of uninjured skin for transplantation purposes.Full- and split-thickness skin grafts remain most used surgical options for burn injuries but would benefit from improvement on esthetic imperfections of scarring, contracture, and color mismatch.Combination therapy using stem cells and tissue matrices for optimized tissue regeneration provide a possible solution to some of these problems. The idea that allogeneic cell products allow construction of screened cell banks that contain donor stem cells which can be expanded or cryopreserved for tissue regeneration has become more of a reality with the advances in recent research. The possibility of transfecting and further manipulating these cells for individualized transplantation therapy is also not out of reach, highlighting many possible avenues of research in the near future.
