In Greg LeMond's time, when he was an up and comer, most Americans didn't notice professional cycling.

Most American junior cyclists burned out and never made a mark later on.

At bike shows they were trying to push BMX or cyclocross, but what they were really trying to compete with was cars. (When the kids became old enough to drive.) Plus, blowing out a teenager's knees or joints when they are young puts a lid on what they can do later.

I think mountain biking caught the attention of far more kids.

Perhaps Lance changed all that.
