FWIW, I guess I'm saying

... I have personal insight into some of the costs and some of the victims of those who dope, and those who enforce Omerta, and those who drive and contribute to keeping doping in cycling.

And I have no illusions about who is screwing whom. Not just racers who didn't achieve the stardom they deserved, earned a tiny fraction of what they should have, etc. But also those who don't want their children involved in sport, exposed to having those terrible choices. It's not just cycling, it's a major issue for all sports -- and it's why I feel the same, in particular, about baseball. And why I despise Barry Bonds. No, there isn't enough evidence to clear the hurdle in a court of law. Yes, anyone with a half a clue that knows the world of doping to any degree, knows the guy was a doping machine. And the coup de grace is this: I faced those difficult choices myself. Even back when I played collegiate athletics, Division I, major conference, top 20 programs were plagued by those undercurrents. It'll never be eliminated, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be minimized and things couldn't be a lot better for those who want to stay on the right side of clean and fair sporting competition.
