And i hope the states moving against him at a state level because of his tariff policy, and other domestic issues, would also move against him on the federal voting level. We all know he believes his winning ways in 2016 was due to his tough guy image and approach, and we all know that his trade policies so far have had many of his 2016 backers, particularly farmers, turning against him.

Again my singular initial question was simply is Trump smart enough to understand that full scale war with Iran would do him (assuming it would) more damage in 2020 than it would benefit him.

Assuming war would not benefit him i'm not sure if he is smart enough to understand that. Then again, he may be.
