Catch 22 if they raise the tariffs high enough its easier to build the crap in the US so we get more jobs but at the consumers expense.
And who are the consumers? Those that have jobs. Take a lesson from Henry Ford. Workers must have work to buy products.
So, do we sacrifice the jobs of many, to assure that those working can buy at a lower cost. Or do we provide jobs, so all (or the vast majority) can enjoy a decent standard of living? For years, Japan and other countries built their economies of buying products produced in their own countries, using tariffs and subsidies to protect their nationalistic markets, as America continued to lose economically. The end result was rampant unemployment in America, with cheaper goods for those that had Jobs.
The beginning of our fight back, was to demand that many of those foreign products be manufactured here, resulting in auto firms from overseas to build factories here. That seemed to alleviate some of the problem, until we helped China build their economy and signed the NAFTA agreement.
As with most things, the pendulum is swinging back toward trying to ensure Americans can live a decent life, by creating jobs. It appears that that is beginning to work positively. People are working again and economically, life is getting better for Americans.
Going to be tough for Biden (or whoever runs against Trump), to persuade those that are enjoying better times to go back to an economy that was weak, while supporting the economic growth of other countries.
