Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Prime Minister, vowed on Tuesday never to utter the name of the twin-mosque gunman as she opened a sombre session of parliament with an evocative "as salaam alaikum" message of peace to Muslims.

One of the most stirring speeches at this morning's ceremony was from survivor Farid Ahmed, who lost his wife in the terror attack. Mr Ahmed, who uses a wheelchair, told the crowd he forgave the gunman. Afterwards he told Lisa Owen why.
