I would be able give a first hand example. As a young forester, I would need to survey land lines on occasion that had long boundaries. Our work was precise enough even back then to have to correct for the curvature of the earth. Otherwise our closing position would off slightly from the reference points. Only one of a million mathematical solutions to curvature proofs.
