What was wrong with those agreements?

It is not a matter of where it is. It is a matter of who controls it. If that Russian company wants to halt production, it could severely restrict our ability to use it. Or, the price could be manipulated to our disadvantage and to the advantage of Putin. Many negative ramifications to letting Russia/Putin have control of one of our national security and energy producing natural resources.

Again, I wonder on one hand, how Putin and Russia can be considered such a threat to America and on the other, why we would sell into his control, a strategic asset?

It is the ultimate decision by the President, that decides such things. Add to that, Obama's capitulation to Putin as he took Crimea, moved into Syria and his lack of interest in giving arms to the Ukraine (so they could protect themselves from the Russians), and I begin to wonder who is/was more a Putin Puppet?

Many claim Trump is in Putin's pocket, but he has been way tougher on Russia and Putin than Obama was.
