To All Media: [FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/10/06
Though I lost my race here in Vermont for U.S. Representative, it is very clear
what the new Congress must do as the first order of business:
Either the impeachment of Bush & Cheney for high crimes must go forward
OR THE CONGRESS MUST FORMALLY DECLARE THAT NO STATE OF WAR
EXISTS BETWEEN THE U.S. AND ANY NATION OR ENTITY, and thus this
President has no extraordinary "War Powers" vested in him at present, and no
authority to attack any nation which has not attacked or threatened to attack
America. [Iraq should be declared a "police action" that will now be wound down.]
My ballot line in the VT Congressional race was "Impeach Bush Now", and I believe
strongly that impeachment of both Bush & Cheney should now be on the table,
complete with all the requisite investigations and testimony taken under oath as may
be necessary to establish that these two are guilty of very high crimes indeed.
Should the new Congress opt instead to strip the President and Cheney of
the War Powers they have wrongly assumed, via the device of a Declaration
That we are Not at War, then I think Congress must also, immediately overturn
certain recently passed laws. I would vote to overturn the Patriot Act, The Military
Commissions Act (habeas corpus), and the John Warner Defense Authorization
Act of 2007 (posse comitatus) as an absolute minimum. And all Halliburton appropriations
must be very closely looked at, especially funds recently voted for "internment camps".
Also all federal laws that have the effect of creating a national police force such as were
used just last week in a nationwide sweep by federal and state & local police forces
of 10,000-28,000 individuals, according to news reports.
