Half of veterans leaving ADF experience mental disorders, report finds

By Shalailah Medhora

Ash was in the army for six years. Towards the end, he was experiencing intense symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and drinking heavily in order to cope.

“My big thing was that I was having lots of nightmares,” he told Hack.

"I was getting really drunk because I’d have less nightmares and it was easier to sleep."

[... to end ...]

What are the solutions?

Ash wants the Government to make getting help from DVA a whole lot easier.

“Why have you made it such a difficult process that people have to do schooling to navigate it, yet you expect people with mental health problems to be able to do it? And when they don’t do it, it’s their problem and their fault,” he said.

Parliament recently passed changes that would give veterans access to support while their claims are being processed by DVA.

Ash said there’s a lot of duplication because different government agencies don’t talk to each other, making the process onerous on veterans.

“You have to do one application for CommSuper, and you have to do the exact same application for DVA.”

Loretta agreed.

“Dealing with DVA affects your mental health because you have to constantly jump through hoops,” she said.

But she reckons more needs to be done before people leave the ADF. She’d like to see the forces link up with
TAFEs and other training providers so that veterans aren’t left without jobs and skills when they transition out.

The report found that the vast majority of veterans (84 per cent) are either working, studying or engaging in some other meaningful activity after they leave the ADF.

Fortunately, having grown up in Canada, i haven't served in a war zone, yet still haven't had any trouble
getting drunk. Sod know where i'd be if i'd suffered any of the experiences so many of you guys have.

It was Plato who said, “He, O men, is the wisest, who like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing”
