"Mostly it is fascinating to see how poor the peer review process is for PNAS!"

that's what I said about the pnas process when kblb went through it...but you argued it was the most intensive professional review process in the world...

of course, now they suck...lol

You are correct! I had great respect for PNAS.
I am SHOCKED to see that so poor a piece of research as this got published there, and that none of the reviewers bothered to look beyond the references given to find the references that they dared not give.

"You also need intimate knowledge of silkworm and spider genetics and silk production systems."

gosh...what would that take nowadays?..a week for them to attain or a couple of phone calls to find a guy?...

What it takes is a researcher of the caliber of Dr. Davis who was able to look at the spider and silkworm genomes and create and synthesize a precursor sequence that would allow the spider fibroin to be properly incorporated into the structure of the silk filament.
It was that insight and that key bit of synthetic genetics that was the real basis if KBLB's success in a task that multiple billion dollar companies had failed at.
These guys are basically at the same place now that the Japanese sock company was about a dozen years ago, lots of spidroin production but near zero improvement in the fiber.
