Actually, it is quite acceptable, and very common, to sell just before financials are released. Big board traders do this all the time. Since no one who is not an insider can predict exactly what will be in them, it's risky to "hang in there."
Many top investors think it's much better to wait until the volatility dies down, then buy back in if the fundies are solid.
Good stocks are obvious. Extensive DD is how you convince yourself to buy a bad one.
