Also, ideally, you would want settings that dynamically adjust themselves over time to compensate for changes in market conditions. As an example, the Equity P/C ratio is an excellent countertrend indicator at its extremes, but the optimum settings for it (high and low) shift as you transition from Bear to Bull markets and back again. Of course, how you define a Bull or Bear market can be contentious in and of itself, and it is best to let the computer decide. However, these techniques are generally used only in more advanced systems.
